Canadians are known for being friendly, polite and modest. For a stereotype, that’s not too bad. But while modesty is fine on a personal level, professionally, it’s important to make you and your accomplishments known.
As a business owner, you can’t afford to wait for someone else to acknowledge your success. You need to bring it to the attention of others on your own. If you are an expert in your field, or provide world class service that clients can’t find anywhere else, brag about it! Speak up, share your knowledge with others and take part in entrepreneurial events. Get your face out there so that customers can feel connected to your product, and know that you stand behind it. Look at Jim Balsillie from Research In Motion, Sarah Prevette from www.sprouter.com or Galen Weston from Loblaws. When you hear those names, or see their faces, you instinctively think of their products, services or brands as well.
We as Canadians have a lot to be proud of. It’s time we showed ourselves off to the world. Give it a try!
Until next time,
Vivian
