Together, we are raising awareness about the importance of entrepreneurship across the province and are also educating Albertans on how to start their own businesses.

Start Your Own Business in Alberta

The Canadian Youth Business Foundation (CYBF) is working together with the Government of Alberta to raise awareness about entrepreneurship in communities across the province and educating Albertans on how to start their own businesses. We are doing this by offering educational business planning workshops and resources to help young entrepreneurs.

If you live in Alberta and you want to start your own business, you are invited to participate in the six-part Business Plan Workshop Series being delivered across the province.

Workshop 1: So, you want to be an entrepreneur?
If you are thinking about becoming an entrepreneur this presentation will give you insights, tips and ideas that you should think about when starting a new business or growing your existing business. Learn what it takes to run a small business and how successful entrepreneurs think. This presentation includes stories of successful CYBF entrepreneurs as well as an overview of the CYBF workshop series.

Workshop 2: Finding the ideal customer: Why you need to do market research
Building a successful business begins with making smart business decisions. Market research can help you determine the demand for your product or services and your competitive market position. Effective market research includes a solid market research plan, the collection, analysis and interpretation of research results, and the application of that information to your business. You will learn about online sources of business research information including: Strategis, Statistics Canada, social media, crowdsourcing, as well as various trade resources and publications.

Workshop 3: Building and implementing a marketing plan to promote your small business
Apply the information from the market research session to help build your marketing plan. Your marketing strategy should incorporate your business goals, articulate your brand and deliver a unique value proposition to your ideal prospects. Learn how to use your marketing resources efficiently (time, money and people), to achieve the best results for your business. An effective marketing mix integrates internet-based communication and social media with public relations, advertising, direct marketing and sales to build relationships with your target market.

Workshop 4: Small business operations: Choosing your team and managing growth
To build, or grow, a small business, you need to have the right people on your team. This presentation will give you insights into how you can attract, select, train, retain and compensate the best people for your small business. Do you hire full-time, part-time or contract workers? Gain an understanding of current labour regulations as they apply to today’s market.

Workshop 5: Best practices for legal and financial health of your small business
Assessing the legal and financial risks of running a small business is critical to your success.  This presentation will give you insights into options for creating the right business structure. You will explore legal considerations, government regulations, insurance, and other common business issues. As well, you will gain an understanding of best practices for managing your finances including financing options, accounting systems, capital cost and operating costs, income projections and cash flow management

Workshop 6: Developing your business plan: Next steps
Incorporate the business skills you have acquired through the five sessions into a business plan (including one-year, three-year and five-year goals). Develop an implementation strategy to ensure your business is success. This presentation will help you prepare a business plan to get financing for your small business venture.
